What to Do About Bleeding Gums

Periodontal ServicesDo you see red when you brush or floss? This is a tell-tale sign of bleeding gums. You may dismiss this as no big deal. It’s just a little blood, right? Actually, bleeding gums can be an early sign of gum disease. Your gums bleed when plaque builds up and causes your gums to become inflamed. It can also happen if you brush with too much gusto. When you notice that your gums are bleeding, the first step is to make an appointment with your dentist. In the meantime, here are some things you can do on your own.

Step Up Your Oral Care Regimen
The best thing you can do to remove bacteria that causes bleeding gums is to brush and floss regularly. Choose a soft-bristled toothbrush over a medium- or hard-bristled one, as the latter can damage your gums. And brush with short, gentle strokes.

Improve Your Diet
Incorporating a diet of nutrient-rich foods can make a big difference in stopping bleeding gums. Avoid sugary foods like candy and soda, which don’t provide the nutrition your gums need to stay healthy. Instead, eat more vegetables and fruits. You can also take nutritional supplements like calcium, vitamin D, vitamin C, magnesium and fish oil, which help nourish the soft tissues in your mouth.
Stop Smoking
It’s true that smoking increases your risk of cancer and heart disease, but it also is a prime culprit for causing gum disease. Tobacco contains toxins that cause inflammation and prevent your gums from getting the nutrition they need. Talk to your dentist about a cessation program that may be right for you.

Reduce Stress

Did you know that stress increases inflammation in your body? And when inflammation occurs, your gums tend to bleed. If you’re constantly on the go, take time out for yourself each day, even if it’s for a few minutes. Breathing exercises or meditation are effective ways to help you relax.

Get Regular Checkups
Having your teeth cleaned on a regular basis is key to stopping and preventing bleeding gums. Schedule regular checkups twice a year to make sure your gums stay healthy and disease-free.
